MEDICAL CODING



                                      The process of assigning a code to diagnoses and procedures in medical records and papers is known as medical coding. Medical coders use classification systems such as ICD-10 and CPT to construct codes that are used for research, reimbursement, and medical data recording. Medical coders look over patient medical records for diagnoses and treatments before assigning the proper codes. The codes are also used for statistical research, tracking sickness and injury trends, and paying insurance companies. 

Medical coder responsibilities include the following:

1. Use existing coding systems to transcribe and analyze patient medical information in order to assign appropriate codes.
2. Examine patient records and give diagnosis and procedure codes.
3. Examine and validate the data entered into the medical billing system.
4. Keep coding systems and databases up to date.
5. Communicate with doctors and other healthcare providers to clarify diagnosis or acquire additional information.

A medical coder must have the following abilities:

1. Understanding of medical language and anatomy
2. Understanding of the ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
3. Detail oriented; 4. Strong organizational abilities and accuracy
5. Understanding of medical billing procedures
