MEDICAL CODING

Medical coding is the process of converting healthcare operations, services, and symptoms into numerical codes. A Medical Coder reports medical diagnoses and procedures to health insurance providers using a set of established codes such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).

ICD-10 is the tenth revision of the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. It includes disease codes, signs and symptoms, aberrant findings, complaints, social settings, and external causes of harm or sickness.

CPT is a medical code set used to report medical, surgical, and diagnostic operations and services to institutions including physicians, health insurance companies, and accreditation agencies.

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) is a set of standardized codes that describe medical operations, supplies, products, and services.
