MEDICAL CODING
The process of turning medical procedures, diagnoses, tools used, treatments received, and other factors into generally accepted alphanumeric codes is known as medical coding. A medical coder transforms data from a patient's medical records, including doctor's notes, lab findings, procedures, and diagnoses, in order to retain accurate medical records. Insurance firms and healthcare providers use these standardized codes for billing and record-keeping.
Three categories of generally recognized medical alphanumeric codes exist:
1) International Classification Of Diseases (ICD): The World Health Organization (WHO) established these diagnostic codes. These codes can categorize signs, conditions, illnesses, and causes of mortality.
2) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes identify medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures.
3) The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) assigns codes to the various pieces of medical gear. They are used by coders to record medical processes, goods, services, and merchandise.
