MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of extracting health care information from a patient's physician's notes, such as medical procedures, diagnoses, essential medical equipment, and medical services. This information is converted into universal medical alphanumeric codes by a medical coder.
Medical Coders uses a set of previously assigned codes for coding purposes, which includes ICD, CPT and HCPCS Codes. ICD Codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of codes published and managed by World Health Organization (WHO). These codes contains a patients' diagnosis, signs and symptoms, reason for cure and illness and more. For instance ICD code C91 denotes leukemia - lymphoid.
Acute lymphocytic leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow- the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. The disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones.
The symptoms of leukemia includes :
- Bleeding from gums
- Bone pain
- Fever
- Frequent infections
