MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of converting a patient's healthcare information, such as medical procedures, diagnoses, medical equipment, and therapy received, into universal codes. For reporting to the recipient's health insurance provider, a medical coder may use a set of published codes on medical diagnoses and procedures such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
- Coding conventions are followed. Provides care providers with coding advice.
- Identifies inconsistencies, potential quality of care issues, and billing problems.
- Conducts research, analyses data, makes recommendations, and promotes action plans to fix differences and prevent future coding errors.
- Identifies aspects that must be reported, complications, and other procedures.
- Serves as a resource and subject matter expert to other members of the coding team.
- Assists the leader or supervisor with employee orientation, training, and mentoring.
- Staff is given continual training as needed.
- As needed, handles unique projects.
