MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of converting a patient's medical diagnoses, treatments, and equipment into common medical alphanumeric codes. ICD codes, or the International Classification of Diseases, and CPT codes, or Current Procedural Terminology, are the two main categories of medical codes utilized in the healthcare industry. These codes are used by medical coders, who send them to insurance companies in order to submit insurance claims and receive payment. Since they comprise the entirety of the claim, these codes must be precise.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is in charge of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Codes, a set of published diagnostic codes. These codes list the diagnosis, symptoms, and any other unusual findings for the patient. For instance, J15. 9 designates pneumonia caused by bacteria.
The air sacs in one or both lungs become inflamed when someone has pneumonia. The air sacs may swell with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing breathing problems, a fever, chills, and a cough that produces pus or phlegm. Bacteria, viruses, and fungi are only a few of the species that can cause pneumonia.
Fever, sweating and trembling chills, chest pain with coughing or breathing, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath are just a few of the symptoms that may appear. Similarly, we can glean a wealth of knowledge about a patient's diagnosis from a single code.
