MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of extracting health care information from a patient's physician's notes, such as medical procedures, diagnoses, essential medical equipment, and medical services. This information is converted into universal medical alphanumeric codes by a medical coder.
For reporting to the recipient's health insurance provider, a medical coder may use a set of published codes on medical diagnoses and procedures, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
A medical coder must therefore be well-versed in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, as well as a basic understanding of clinical procedures, diseases, injuries, and other conditions, medical illustrations, clinical documentation (such as medical or surgical reports and patient charts), legal and ethical aspects of health information, health data standards, classification conventions, and computer- or paper-based data management, typically as obtained through formal eLearning.
