MEDICAL CODING
Medical Coding is the translating medical diagnoses, procedures and treatments into alphanumeric codes. These codes are typically used by healthcare providers, insurance companies to keep track of healthcare costs and ensures that patients are billed correctly for procedures.
Medical Coder analyze and interpret medical diagnosis and records and assign them the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes. They generate codes with the help of previously assigned codes like:
- International Classification of Diseases or ICD Codes: This is a set of codes published and managed by WHO, which contains patients' diagnosis.
- Current Procedural Terminology or CPT Codes : These codes are set of codes maintained by American Medical Association which contains procedures done during a healthcare process. These codes are used for billing processes.
- Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System or HCPCS codes : These codes are used to denote equipment used by a healthcare process by a healthcare professional on a patient.
Medical Billers send these generated codes to insurance companies to claim insurance for payment purposes. Medical Billers create invoices based on the medical codes assigned to patient care. They submit claims to insurance companies.
