Medical Billing is the process of assigning bills for the payment purpose. Medical Coding is the process of assigning codes to a patients' healthcare diagnosis and any other procedures. These codes are important for reimbursement purposes. Medical Billers take these generated codes and sent to insurance companies to claim insurance for the patients' payment purpose.
Medical Coding and Billing are distinct process but related. They both are important for healthcare. Both the medical coders and billers are supposed to have a grip on medical terminology, anatomy and other skills. Medical Coders generate the codes based on the patients' diagnosis, procedures, treatment received and equipment used in a healthcare process. ICD codes or International Classification of Diseases are diagnostic codes and CPT codes or Current Procedural Terminology are procedure codes while, HCPCS codes or Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System are codes denoting equipment used during a healthcare procedure.
