MEDICAL CODING

Medical Coding is the transformation of a patient's healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services and equipment into universal alphanumeric codes. These codes are generated from doctor's notes, laboratory and radiologic results etc. By assigning proper codes, medical coders are creating a claim to be paid by insurance providers. Hence these codes must be accurate as they make up the whole payment claim.

Medical Coders use a set of assigned codes for coding purpose which includes :

ICD or International Classification of Diseases : These codes are published and managed by World Health Organization (WHO) . These codes contains diseases, injuries, signs and symptoms or any other abnormal findings on a patient. These are diagnostic codes.

CPT or Current Procedural Terminology : These codes are owned by American Medical Association, describing services provided by healthcare professionals. They use these codes to report services they perform in patients.

HCPCS or Health Care Procedural Coding System: These codes are used for measure tracking, outpatient surgery billing and academic studies.
