MEDICAL CODING

The conversion of a patient's healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical devices, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes is known as medical coding. ICD codes, or International Classification of Diseases, and CPT codes, or Current Procedural Terminology, are the two most common types of medical codes used in healthcare. Medical Coders use these codes to submit insurance claims to insurance companies for payment. These codes must be correct because they comprise the entire claim.

Medical coders review patient medical records, including physician notes, test findings, and other paperwork, to determine the medical services and diagnoses provided during the patient's visit.
To preserve coding integrity and compliance, coders must adhere to specified coding principles, rules, and regulations. They must stay current on coding changes and updates.

Medical coders' attention to detail and expertise of coding systems are critical for effective billing of healthcare services, accurate health data collection, and general efficiency of healthcare operations. They are crucial in ensuring that healthcare professionals are fairly compensated for their services while maintaining the greatest levels of accuracy and compliance.
